For marketing specialists
Before you sign that marketing agreement, check these three things.
Marketing work is sold as retainers, projects and consulting hours. The agreement decides how much work the retainer buys, whether you are held to results you do not control, and who pays for ad spend and tools.
This retainer covers everything the client requests and lets a month go unpaid if leads fall short.
An unpaid month if leads fall short
Lead volume depends on budget, offer and market, most of which you do not control, and a short month can mean a month of work for nothing.
Ask for
Look at how the clause is worded, and ask for payment to be tied to work delivered rather than to results.

The numbers
In May 2025, there were 899,580 wage and salary jobs for market research analysts and marketing specialists in the U.S., with a median annual wage of $78,760.
These figures count jobs, not people, and do not include self-employed work — so they say little about how many market research analysts and marketing specialists work freelance or run their own business.

Retainer scope, results clauses and ad spend
- Retainer scope — Check how many deliverables or hours the retainer covers, and how extra requests are priced.
- Results — A clause tying payment or termination to results such as leads or sales can make you answer for things outside your control. Look at how it is worded.
- Ad spend and tools — Check who pays for ad budgets and software, and whether you are asked to front them.
