For UX & UI designers
Before you sign that UX design contract, check these three things.
A product design engagement can start as “design the app” and grow into research, testing and hand-off support. The contract decides which of those the fee covers, what counts as done, and whether you may show the work afterwards.
This product design agreement lets the work grow on request while the fee stays fixed.
Research and testing added on request
“As the Company may request” lets research, testing and developer hand-off grow without a limit while the fee in Schedule A stays the same.

The numbers
In May 2025, there were 113,330 wage and salary jobs for web and digital interface designers in the U.S., with a median annual wage of $104,000.
These figures count jobs, not people, and do not include self-employed work — so they say little about how many web and digital interface designers work freelance or run their own business.

Scope, portfolio rights and NDA length
- Scope of the engagement — Research, prototypes, testing and developer hand-off are separate pieces of work. A scope that lists them, with what is excluded, keeps them from being added for free.
- Portfolio rights — Some agreements bar you from showing any of the work. Check whether you can show it after launch, or with client details removed.
- Confidentiality length — An NDA with no end date can cover product details long after they are public. Look for a time limit and the usual exceptions.
