For hairstylists
Before you sign that booth rental or salon agreement, check these three things.
Stylists work on commission, as employees, or by renting a chair. A booth rental agreement can look like a simple weekly rent, but it can also decide whether rent can rise, whether your clients stay with the salon when you leave, and which products you are required to use.
This booth rental agreement lets the salon raise rent at any time and restricts clients who visited during your term.
Rent can go up at any time
There is no notice period and no cap, so next week's rent is whatever the salon decides.
Ask for
Ask how often rent can change, how much notice you get, and for a cap on increases.

The numbers
In May 2025, there were 305,710 wage and salary jobs for hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists in the U.S., with a median annual wage of $35,790.
These figures count jobs, not people, and do not include self-employed work — so they say little about how many hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists work freelance or run their own business.

Booth rent, client limits and salon control
- Rent and increases — Check how often the rent can change, how much notice you get, and what it includes (products, towels, booking system).
- Client restrictions — A clause barring you from serving clients after you leave can reach clients you brought with you. Check its length and scope.
- Control over your work — If the salon sets your hours, prices and products, check how the agreement describes the relationship.

A booth rental agreement decides more than the weekly rent. Free: one analysis every 30 days, no card. Each analysis gives a risk read of the key clauses, quotes the contract's own words for its findings, and turns each flagged clause into a specific ask.
